STEYNING JAZZ CLUB PAST PROGRAMME

August 1st THE MODERN JAZZ TRIO	Led by John Horler piano, (who has played several times at the club) with Sam Burgess bass, and Mike Smith drums. John is a much respected composer, arranger and pianist, having worked very closely with John Dankworth and Cleo Laine since 1984 as their pianist. He has been continuously active with such leaders as Pete King, Tommy Whittle and Tony Coe. His current trio have recently recorded the highly acclaimed CD, "The Key To it All" which features some original compositions by John and some fine standards. My copy has rarely been out of the player, and tonight they plan to play excerpts from their recent CD – which was performed and recorded live at The Watermill Jazz Club.
July 4th THE NEW CITY JAZZMEN	Celebrating their Golden Anniversary year of great traditional jazz, the youthful and ever popular band return to give us another great evening. The band has been delighting jazz aficionados for the last 50+ years, and have the reputation as one of the finest traditional bands in Sussex. The are led by raconteur and bon viveur Bernard Hodgson on trumpet, with Ron Westcott on trombone, Chris Jaques clarinet, Mike Godfrey piano, Sluff Hazell banjo, Alan Kennington bass, Barry Lewis drums and Penny Payne on vocals.
June 6th JACK CRYER and TERRY WHITNEY	Brighton vocalist JACK CRYER with local pianist TERRY WHITNEY present a further selection of favourite songs from The Great American Songbook. Repeating their great successes from previous years, this time they will be featuring a selection of memorable songs by Harold Arlen and Richard Rodgers. Joining them tonight will be a great collection of musicians ROY BOWER trumpet, GERRY HIGGINS bass, PETER BURTON drums, and CHRIS MACDONALD reeds.
May 2nd DAVE STRADWICK’S SUSSEX JAZZ KINGS	Making a most welcome return to the club, led by DAVE STRADWICK, trumpet, with BERNARD STUTT clarinet, JOHN HOWLETT trombone, GRAHAM WISEMAN bass, PHIL DURELL banjo, and old friend of S.J.C., JOHN HALL drums. The Sussex Jazz Kings are hugely popular across the county playing a programme of happy and hot rhythmic New Orleans Jazz.
April 4th TERRY SEABROOK’S CUBANA BOP	Featuring newcomers Graeme Flowers on trumpet, Davide Mantovani on Bass and Adam Riley on drums and timbales. Ian Price is on sax and flute, Satin Singh is on congas and percussion and the band leader Terry Seabrook is on keyboard. This crackling Latin Jazz Group from Brighton is in the middle of a UK Tour promoting their new c.d. “Now Hear This.”
March 7th THE BRIAN WHITE QUARTET	A welcome return to the club for this popular band led by musician, teacher and student again, BRIAN WHITE on tenor, clarinet and flute with MALCOLM CLIFF keyboard, GODFREY SHEPPARD bass and with ALEX EBERHARD on drums. Brian runs the monthly and highly popular Midhurst Jazz Workshop for all musicians keen to progress with their jazz playing and he has been playing in the recent Chichester Jazz Festival. A great jazz quartet playing all the best known standards.
February 1st MAX COLLIE and his RHYTHM ACES	MAX COLLIE and his RHYTHM ACES return to the club! Formed in the ‘60s by MAX COLLIE, trombone & vocals, this highly successful band (with a string of records and TV/ Radio performances under their belt) have been feted around the world including winning the highly prized “Championship of New Orleans Jazz in Indianapolis”. The line-up is ALAN(Slim) POSTON drums, DENNY ILETT trumpet, COUNT JOHN McCORMICK bass, KARL HIRD clarinet, and local musician, GEORGE WALKER banjo/ vocals.
January 4th THE GEOFF EALES’ TRIO	GEOFF EALES Ph.D, M. Mus, LRAM is one of the finest piano players in the UK. He caused a huge stir of excitement with the audience last year, and his return is most welcome. He is also a musical director, arranger and composer, having just completed an extensive tour of the UK, with great notices wherever he plays. Geoff has marked his return to his jazz roots with an album called “The Homecoming” from which he will be playing a selection of numbers tonight including his brilliant treatment of standards with the accompaniment of jazz & rock legends ROY BABBINGTON on the bass and MARK FLETCHER drums. “A complete pianist whose work is a complete joy” Tony Augarde, Jazz Rag on Geoff Eales.
December 7th ALAN BARNES	(Composer, arranger, raconteur, broadcaster and musician of huge talent) returns to repeat his fine performance of last year with local and highly respected musicians PETER GODFREY piano, STEVE THOMPSON on string bass and ALEX EBERHARD on drums. ALAN is known and respected for his dazzling and inventive playing – and for his skills as a lyrical composer and arranger.
November 2nd THE SPIKE WELLS TRIO	Long established as one of our finest musicians, SPIKE has always brought together the very best musicians to form his bands. Over the years, Spike has played with Stan Getz, Joe Harriott, Pete King, Roland Kirk, Bobby Wellins, Simon Spillett and Tubby Hayes. MALCOLM CREESE, teacher, arranger and playing tonight on string bass, is a founder member of Acoustic Triangle with Tim Garland. MARK EDWARDS, piano, is a composer and virtuoso pianist who has played with Jean Toussaint, Bobby Wellins, Ben Castle, Pete King and has toured and recorded worldwide with AZTEC CAMERA and US singer-songwriter Terry Callier.
October 5th THE NEW CITY JAZZMEN	The Jazzmen mark a most important date with us tonight - The oldest established jazz band in Sussex celebrate their 40th Anniversary this year. They played to a packed and highly appreciative house last year led by BERNARD HODGSON trumpet, CHRIS JACQUES clarinet, RON WESCOTT trombone, MIKE GODFREY piano, SLUFF HAZEL banjo, ALAN KENNINGTON bass and joined by vocalist PENNY PAYNE. Expect great traditional jazz and more than just a few anecdotes.
September 7th GOOD VIBES	We are delighted to be joined tonight by GOOD VIBES in the company of PETER BURTON, drummer and driving force for this great band with PETER GODFREY piano, STEVE THOMPSON bass, DAVE JONES vibes, FRANK TAYLOR guitar, and CHRIS MACDONALD reeds. Last year, the band celebrated their 10th Anniversary, launching an excellent new CD, copies of which will be available tonight. Tonight September 7th, is once again our membership renewal night and we open the doors early at 7.30 pm to share a glass of wine with all, and to sign you up for another year of exciting jazz music in all its forms & styles. £10 is the membership fee.
August 3rd DAVE STRADWICK’S SUSSEX JAZZ KINGS	Making a most welcome debut at the club, led by DAVE STRADWICK, trumpet, with BERNARD STUTT clarinet, JOHN HOWLETT trombone, GRAHAM WISEMAN bass, PHIL DURELL banjo, and old friend of S.J.C., JOHN HALL drums. The Sussex Jazz Kings are hugely popular across the county (even as far North as the frozen tundra of Dorking) and they play a programme of happy and rhythmic New Orleans Jazz.
July 6th ULTRASWING RETURNS!	We have had so many requests for this band, one of the UK's top exponents of manouche gypsy jazz. The band evokes all that was wonderful of The Hot Club of France, and they are MATTHEW GUEZ & JOHNNY HEPBIR guitars, DAN SHEPPARD bass and PETE WATSON accordion. The band have recently appeared at the Marlborough International Gypsy Jazz Festival to huge acclaim.
June 1st TERRY WHITNEY "THE SONGBOOK RE-VISITED"	Repeating their great successes from previous years, TERRY WHITNEY local arranger and pianist, will be leading his team through some the most favourite songs in the American Songbook. Joining him will be ROY BOWER trumpet, GERRY HIGGINS bass, PETER BURTON drums, CHRIS MACDONALD reeds and much acclaimed Brighton vocalist JACK CRYER. This evening will form part of the Steyning Festival.
May 4th LEE GIBSON	Makes her Steyning debut tonight with her trio. LEE is a one of the UK’s premier jazz singers and is also highly rated as a teacher for workshops and masterclasses – teaching as Associate Professor at the Guildhall School of Music. Her singing goes from strength to strength and she brings with her a renowned trio of musicians: JOHN HORLER on piano, PAUL MORGAN bass and GERRY BOYCE on drums.
April 6th Club Not Open	The club will not be opening on April 6th, as this falls on Good Friday.
March 2nd THE KAREN SHARP QUINTET	Led by KAREN SHARP on tenor saxophone. Karen has been described as "a Class A player" by Humphrey Lyttelton and the band she has gathered tonight are equally highly rated. They are ADRIAN FRY trombone, JOHN DAY bass, JOHN PERRY drums, and RICHARD BUSIAKIEWICZ piano. Their music is lively and swinging mainstream and their recently launched CD is getting fantastic ratings in the music press.
February 2nd MAX COLLIE RHYTHM ACES	Making their first and most welcome appearance at the club. Formed in the '60s by MAX COLLIE, trombone & vocals, this highly successful band (with a string of records and TV/ Radio performances under their belt) have been feted around the world including winning the highly prized "Championship of New Orleans Jazz in Indianapolis". The line-up is ALAN POSTON drums, DENNY ILETT trumpet, COUNT JOHN McCORMICK bass, KARL HIRD clarinet, and local musician - GEORGE WALKER banjo/ vocals.
January 5th HARRY STRUTTERS HOT RHYTHM ORCHESTRA	More orchestrated musical mayhem with the wonderfully anarchic Strutters. Last year was, like the previous year, totally sold-out with intimate seating on the stage. Admission will be on the door as usual, so please come early to ensure a seat. November 3rd THE NEW GATEWAY JAZZ BAND	One of the South’s major jazz attractions and popular bands will be playing the IRVING BERLIN SONGBOOK as well as some of their more popular numbers from the ‘30s onwards. Sadly, the band will be without their trombonist and founding member KEITH SAMUEL who passed away earlier this year. We all miss him. BILL HARVEY, trumpet and vocals will be maintaining musical order with the help of ROY SEAR alto sax and clarinet, MAURICE DENNIS banjo and guitar, ALAN SOKELL sousaphone, ALVERN EMBER drums and JOHN MUMFORD trombone.
October 6th SIMON SPILLETT’S QUARTET	SIMON SPILLETT has been described as "a fiery saxophonist in the mould of the late Tubby Hayes" And it is Tubby Hayes who has such clear influences on Simon, who shares a fondness for fast tempos and has a sheer desire to create exciting no holds barred jazz. Simon's current quartet features JOHN CRITCHINSON on piano, with ANDY CLEYNDERT and MARTIN DREW - the rhythm section of the late Ronnie Scott's last working band - and the group have played successful club and concert engagements across the UK in 2006 including the prestigious BRECON JAZZ FESTIVAL, where they performed to a standing room only crowd.
September 1st GOOD VIBES	Steyning Jazz Club is delighted to announce that GOOD VIBES celebrate their 10th Anniversary in the company of PETER BURTON, drummer and driving force for this blessed union with PETER GODFREY piano, STEVE THOMPSON bass, DAVE JONES vibes, FRANK TAYLOR guitar, CHRIS MACDONALD reeds and with many guest players who will join the band to celebrate their birthday in appropriate style. To mark this date, the band is launching a new CD, copies of which will be available tonight. August 4th PROGRAMME CHANGE:	DANNY MOSS, sadly, has had to cancel his date with us in August. He tells us that he is making good progress with his health and we send him our best wishes. ALAN BARNES, saxes, clarinet, composer, broadcaster and leading member of the UK Jazz Scene, has kindly agreed to frontline the quartet this month which will feature PETER GODFREY on piano, JOHN WOOD on drums and STEVE THOMPSON on string bass. ALAN is known and respected for his dazzling and inventive playing – and for his skills as a lyrical composer and arranger.
July 7th THE BRIAN WHITE QUARTET	A welcome return to the club for this popular band led by musician, teacher and, once again student - BRIAN WHITE on tenor, clarinet and flute with MALCOLM CLIFF keyboard, GODFREY SHEPHERD bass and with celebrity guest drummer. Brian runs the monthly and highly popular Midhurst Jazz Workshop for all musicians keen to progress with their jazz playing and he has a residency in Bognor Regis at The Ship.
June 2nd CUFF BILLET'S NEW EUROPA BAND	Will be coming to the club for the first time. CUFF BILLETT, trumpet, fronts the band and is joined by LOZ GARFIELD reeds, CHRIS TILLEY banjo, JOHN CLARKE piano, PETE JACKMAN drums, CLIFF HARPER / RAY GOULD bass. The NEW EUROPA BAND, formed in 1970 is highly respected for the authenticity and freshness of their treatment of the lesser-known tunes of the 1920's and '30s. They are regularly seen touring throughout the UK and have recently played at the Ascona and Arosa Jazz Festivals in Switzerland as well as in Germany and Belgium.
May 5th CAMPBELL BURNAP with TERRY WHITNEY AND HIS QUARTET	Making a welcome and regular return to the club. CAMPBELL is a well known broadcaster, raconteur, vocalist and trombonist of great note, together with TERRY WHITNEY, local musician, arranger and pianist; they will be joining forces once again with a stellar group of musicians including GERRY HIGGINS bass, CHRIS MACDONALD reeds, PETER BURTON drums and ROY BOWER trumpet. They will be playing the best known standards of the '30s and beyond
April 7th ALLISON NEALE QUARTET	With DAVE CLIFF guitar, SIMON THORPE bass, MATT SKELTON drums and ALLISON NEALE on the alto saxophone. Allison's playing has been described as gentle and so understated that it melts at the edges - much in tone like the late PAUL DESMOND. Allison brings a lyrical quality to the standards, which she plays with enormous sensitivity and respect. The Quartet works brilliantly well together, and they communicate a perfect sense of harmony and balance.

February 3rd THE MATT WATES SEXTET	A modern sextet playing the compositions of MATT WATES (alto, composer and arranger) and some of the standards, with MARTIN SHAW trumpet, STEVE KALDESTAD tenor, LEON GREENING piano (who made a great impression on us with Christian Brewer last year), STEVE BROWN drums and MALCOLM CREESE bass. The late Benny Green described Matt?s playing as ?fluent, melodious and sure-footed? His sextet provides a matchless combination too.
January 6th HARRY STRUTTERS HOT RHYTHM ORCHESTRA	An unmissable evening of elegant musical mayhem in the company of the wonderful Strutters (no fishing will be allowed during this performance) Last year was a total sell-out event, and we even had people seated on the stage! Admission will be at the door as usual, so please come early to ensure a seat. December 2nd THE NEW JAZZ COURIERS	Martin Drew is one of the most accomplished drummers around today. He was drummer with Ronnie Scott's Band for 27 years, and has played with the Oscar Peterson Quartet for the last 20 years. He has brought together a blistering band of great virtuoso players in his quintet: MORNINGTON LOCKET on tenor, PAUL MORGAN on bass, STEVE MELLING on keyboard and JIM HART on vibes. Expect an evening of high-energy jazz, ranging from hard bop through to some great ballads. Martin will be bringing with him his latest CD recorded with the Jazz Couriers, which has received much acclaim in the jazz journals.
November 4th THE NEW GATEWAY JAZZ BAND	FROM DIXIELAND TO DUKE. The New Gateway Jazz Band invites club members to join them on a tour of some the landmarks of the classic jazz repertoire. Inspired by such jazz greats as Armstrong, Oliver, Beiderbecke, Morton, Waller and Ellington, this versatile six-piece band promises us a programme full of entertaining diversity and good old-fashioned toe-tapping swing. KEITH SAMUEL leads the band on trombone, with BILL HARVEY (cornet, vocals), ROY SEAR (clarinet and alto saxophone), MAURICE DENNIS (banjo and guitar), ALLAN SOKELL (sousaphone) and JOHN HALL (drums).
October 7th THE CHRISTIAN BREWER QUINTET	Making their first appearance at the club led by lyrical alto player and composer, CHRISTIAN BREWER with an all-star band of PHIL DONKIN bass, TRISTAN MAILLOT drums, JIM HART vibes, LEON GREENING piano. This is a high energy band with a recent and highly successful residency at RONNIE SCOTT'S. Christian's band of musicians have been described as the "Young Lions" of the London Jazz Scene.
September 2nd THE DANNY MOSS QUARTET	Featuring world class tenor player DANNY MOSS CBE who was the featured soloist with the TED HEATH BAND and THE JOHN DANKWORTH BAND in the UK. He accompanied TONY BENNETT in the USA as well as having toured with PEANUTS HUCKO. He is joined tonight by his son DANNY MOSS jnr on bass, PETER GODFREY piano and JOHN WOODS on drums. Tonight, September 2nd is membership renewal night, and we open the doors early at 7.30 pm to share a glass of wine with each other & to sign up for another year of jazz hot and cool.

An authentically traditional band, with a great following throughout Sussex.
July 1st THE GARY KAVANAGH QUARTET	With GARY KAVANAGH on trumpet and flugelhorn, ROY HILTON piano, JEREMY BROWN bass and SPIKE WELLS on drums. A band with a great and loyal following in the UK and with strong roots of influence in the modern Brighton Jazz Scene. They will be playing the great standards with some bebop for the aficionados. Gary was recently at the Chichester Jazz Club when the lights failed mid solo. No connection, he tells me, enigmatically.
June 3rd THE TERRY WHITNEY QUINTET	Local pianist and arranger Terry Whitney will be joined this evening by a stellar group of local musicians, well known to and frequently requested by the members of The Steyning Jazz Club. Terry's Quintet includes CHRIS MACDONALD reeds, ROY BOWER trumpet, PETER BURTON drums and GERRY HIGGINS bass. They will be playing a programme of jazz standards from the 1930's onwards.
May 6th THE BRIAN WHITE QUARTET	A very popular band, playing classic jazz standards led by musician / teacher BRIAN WHITE, tenor saxophone, clarinet and flute, with MALCOLM CLIFF keyboard, STEVE THOMPSON bass, and guest drummer. Brian's quartet has a popular following in Sussex and they have a residency at The Ship in Bognor Regis. Brian also runs a monthly Jazz Workshop at Midhurst.
April 1st SID BAILEY'S TAILGATE SIX	This New Orleans Band makes a most welcome return to the club, led by hot trombonist and musical director SID BAILEY with BOB JENKINS clarinet, TONY ASHWELL trumpet, JOHN BOYATT string bass, STU MORRISON banjo, and with BARRY LEWIS on the drums. A lively and ever popular band, with a great sense of authenticity for the original standards. Sid plans a tour of New Orleans later this year.
March 4th DAVE HORLER with THE JOHN HORLER TRIO	DAVE HORLER is Trombonist/ Arranger with the WDR Band in Cologne; his younger brother JOHN HORLER is the pianist / arranger/ composer with John Dankworth and Cleo Laine, having performed regularly at Ronnie Scott's with Zoot Sims, Chet Baker and Victor Feldman. Joining John tonight will be MIKE SMITH drums, and DAVE GREEN on bass - both highly respected and admired musicians of the UK Jazz Scene.
February 7th GOOD VIBES	A most welcome return to the club of this elegant and cool band, playing bossa through to mainstream jazz with: PETER GODFREY piano, STEVE THOMPSON bass, DAVE JONES vibes, FRANK TAYLOR guitar, CHRIS MACDONALD reeds and PETER BURTON drums.
