THE MODERN JAZZ TRIO |
Led by John Horler piano, (who has played several times at the club) with Sam Burgess bass, and Mike Smith drums. John is a much respected composer, arranger and pianist, having worked very closely with John Dankworth and Cleo Laine since 1984 as their pianist. He has been continuously active with such leaders as Pete King, Tommy Whittle and Tony Coe. His current trio have recently recorded the highly acclaimed CD, "The Key To it All" which features some original compositions by John and some fine standards. My copy has rarely been out of the player, and tonight they plan to play excerpts from their recent CD – which was performed and recorded live at The Watermill Jazz Club. |

Celebrating their Golden Anniversary year of great traditional jazz, the youthful and ever popular band return to give us another great evening. The band has been delighting jazz aficionados for the last 50+ years, and have the reputation as one of the finest traditional bands in Sussex. The are led by raconteur and bon viveur Bernard Hodgson on trumpet, with Ron Westcott on trombone, Chris Jaques clarinet, Mike Godfrey piano, Sluff Hazell banjo, Alan Kennington bass, Barry Lewis drums and Penny Payne on vocals. |

We have had so many requests for this band, one of the UK's top exponents of manouche gypsy jazz. LEE is a one of the UK’s premier jazz singers and is also highly rated as a teacher for workshops and masterclasses – teaching as Associate Professor at the Guildhall School of Music. One of the South’s major jazz attractions and popular bands will be playing the IRVING BERLIN SONGBOOK as well as some of their more popular numbers from the ‘30s onwards. Sadly, the band will be without their trombonist and founding member KEITH SAMUEL who passed away earlier this year. We all miss him. BILL HARVEY, trumpet and vocals will be maintaining musical order with the help of ROY SEAR alto sax and clarinet, MAURICE DENNIS banjo and guitar, ALAN SOKELL sousaphone, ALVERN EMBER drums and JOHN MUMFORD trombone. |

SIMON SPILLETT’S QUARTET |
SIMON SPILLETT has been described as "a fiery saxophonist in the mould of the late Tubby Hayes" And it is Tubby Hayes who has such clear influences on Simon, who shares a fondness for fast tempos and has a sheer desire to create exciting no holds barred jazz. Simon's current quartet features JOHN CRITCHINSON on piano, with ANDY CLEYNDERT and MARTIN DREW - the rhythm section of the late Ronnie Scott's last working band - and the group have played successful club and concert engagements across the UK in 2006 including the prestigious BRECON JAZZ FESTIVAL, where they performed to a standing room only crowd. |

Will be coming to the club for the first time. CUFF BILLETT, trumpet, fronts the band and is joined by LOZ GARFIELD reeds, CHRIS TILLEY banjo, JOHN CLARKE piano, PETE JACKMAN drums, CLIFF HARPER / RAY GOULD bass. The NEW EUROPA BAND, formed in 1970 is highly respected for the authenticity and freshness of their treatment of the lesser-known tunes of the 1920's and '30s. They are regularly seen touring throughout the UK and have recently played at the Ascona and Arosa Jazz Festivals in Switzerland as well as in Germany and Belgium. |

Martin Drew is one of the most accomplished drummers around today. He was drummer with Ronnie Scott's Band for 27 years, and has played with the Oscar Peterson Quartet for the last 20 years. He has brought together a blistering band of great virtuoso players in his quintet: MORNINGTON LOCKET on tenor, PAUL MORGAN on bass, STEVE MELLING on keyboard and JIM HART on vibes. Expect an evening of high-energy jazz, ranging from hard bop through to some great ballads. Martin will be bringing with him his latest CD recorded with the Jazz Couriers, which has received much acclaim in the jazz journals. |

Inspired by such jazz greats as Armstrong, Oliver, Beiderbecke, Morton, Waller and Ellington, this versatile six-piece band promises us a programme full of entertaining diversity and good old-fashioned toe-tapping swing.

Gary was recently at the Chichester Jazz Club when the lights failed mid solo. No connection, he tells me, enigmatically. |
